SUMMARY:Collegiate Combo Competition Winner
DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation is celebrating the excellence and opportunity inherent in Michigan’s college and university jazz programs. Where once jazz was viewed as an inappropriate area of study in Colleges and Universities\, now jazz degree programs and ensembles are a central part of many music departments across the country. These programs are led by some of the leading jazz artists in the world and offer students powerful mentoring\, valuable information\, creative direction\, and unique performance opportunities.

SUMMARY:Lady Vonne
DESCRIPTION:Lady Vonne had the “look” of a STAR from her earliest years as a singer performing at nightclubs in Detroit. In her youth\, she sang in the church choir and played violin and clarinet in school. But it wasn’t until she began playing the hotel circuit through the Lorio Ross Agency that her singing career began to flourish. It was where she honed her craft. As she advanced\, she took on a much more glamorous look that properly conveyed the level of her talent. \n While known primarily for Jazz\, Lady Vonne is adept at performing American Standards\, Broadway Show Tunes and R&B. She has also performed on stage in a theatrical production where she played the role of Phyllis Hyman and co-starred in “When A Woman’s Fed Up. Lady Vonne is one of Detroit’s Jazz greats. She has opened for Phyllis Hyman\, Joe Sample and Chaka Khan. She has sung at Comerica Park\, Detroit’s Music Hall\, The Detroit Convention Center\, Baker’s Keyboard Lounge\, Arts Beats & Eats\, The Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival. and The Greektown and Motor City Casinos. Lady Vonne’s timeless voice brings back the sounds of America’s Jazz Legends. She also sings American Standards and the hits of Contemporary Stars.

SUMMARY:Planet D Nonet
DESCRIPTION:PD9 is a pared down version of the traditional big bands of the 1930s\, and they frequently feature guest vocalists\, adding to the versatility of the band’s show. The number of musicians in the lineup is reminiscent of the earliest big bands\, when swing was still evolving into the sound that defined jazz music’s most popular era. \n“The band retains the agility of a small group\,” says Spangler\, “but with the harmonic palette of a larger one.” \nBrian McCollum of the Detroit Free Press calls Planet D Nonet “one of Detroit’s great party bands\,” with a “sweeping field of vision that ranges from Swing Era classics to connoisseur works by Duke Ellington\, mind-expanding pieces by the visionary Sun Ra and some down-and-dirty joint R&B.” \nThe group has been nominated and awarded multiple honors over the past decade\, including seven Detroit Music Awards. Most recently\, they were named 2019 DMA for Outstanding Traditional Jazz Artist/Group\, and not surprisingly that was not the first time they received that award.

From his experience has come his reputation for being vastly knowledgeable\, passionate\, and mature about his craft for his age. He has been said\, according to Kris Johnson\, to be a “natural leader who searches for new ways to make personal connections with the music”. Having graduated from the acclaimed Detroit School of Arts High School\, known for producing popular artists such as Aaliyah\, and the vibrant bassist Endea Owens\, a strong foundation and seriousness was established for Jauron early on through effective exposure and world-class mentorship. In addition to his performance endeavors\, Jauron also conducts outreach as a youth mentor and advocates for young people across Michigan matriculating into the arts and entertainment industry. He is always constructing his own original compositions and aspires to lead bands of varying styles and sizes from small group to big band and straight ahead jazz to funk and fusion. Looking to perform around the globe\, Jauron desires to spread a message of unity\, diversity\, and awareness through his music. To do this\, he believes in honoring the tradition by using elements of the bebop/hard bop eras\, pay tribute to the legends and his mentors\, and include relevant themes of today’s world in his approach to the music. Within his mission\, Jauron will forever honor his grandfather\, Gordon Perry\, in everything he does because his grandfather is at the root of how it all began. Gordon Perry is one of Jauron’s greatest inspirations. He dedicates his artistic identity to him and vows to finish what his grandfather started.
