SUMMARY:FUTURE VISIONS FEAT. MICHAEL ZAPORSKI
DESCRIPTION:Michael Zaporski creates astonishing music that merges American jazz traditions with West-African-Influenced rhythmic dialogue. Serving as the pianist for the late Detroit saxophonist Sam Sanders\, Michael traveled West Africa\, performing and teaching jazz through the U.S. State Department. This long-time association led to performances with such renowned jazz artists as Jackie McLean\, Frank Foster\, Pharaoh Sanders\, Donald Byrd and Marcus Belgrave. Through his own ensemble\, FutureVisions\, Michael has garnered headlining performances at jazz festivals and colleges\, and has released several recordings. Including a Jazz Spiritual–The Prophet— written for orchestra\, chorus and jazz quartet—-to critical acclaim. Combining haunting melodic structures and adrenaline pumping energy levels with West African rhythmic concepts\, Michael continues the pursuit of excellence and individuality that is the essence of the American jazz tradition.

SUMMARY:DR. PROFESSOR LEONARD KING
DESCRIPTION:Leonard King Jr.\, also known as Dr. Prof. Leonard King\, is a drummer/vocalist/composer/arranger who has been a full-time musician since 1960 (age 12). He is the consummate Detroit\, MI musician whose influences and achievements are vast\, which is due to the musical climate of that city and the state of Michigan in general. Although the city is musically known for the output of the Motown Records Corporation of the 1960’s and early ‘70’s\, Leonard was able to tap into the wellspring of all of the music genres in the city and prosper in the climate of the “Detroit Way” (as famed bassist James Jamerson used to say). \nIn late 1962\, at age 14\, he decided it was time to be a band leader and\, with his two brothers and a few neighborhood youngsters\, started The Jazz Sextet which later became known as Leonard King and the Soul Messengers (1963-73). The group became very popular providing accompaniment for a variety of single artists and groups who did not have their own bands. Additionally the group provided music for fashion shows\, industrial presentations\, and many social events. These experiences served as a basis for other ensembles: Strata Nova (1976-88)\, Visger Road Drum Band (1991-2006) Proportioned Orchestra (1989-present)\, Oopapada (1995-present)\, Dr. Prof. Leonard King “Drum Fun & Vocals\, Too” (1990-present)\, and the Dr. Prof. Leonard King Orchestra (2010-present).

SUMMARY:ZEN ZADRAVEC
DESCRIPTION:Zen Zadravec\, jazz pianist\, saxophonist\, and composer views all music as a form of creative communication. The goal is to create music based on human experience. It is also to absorb as much music as possible to develop through the lens of Humanism based on the philosophies of Nichiren Buddhism. Ultimately\, Zadravec strives to create music that inspires\, encourages\, and touches people’s hearts. \n  \nZadravec is a musical chameleon. Whether it is jazz\, R&B\, funk\, rock\, or pop\, he plays each with freshness and confidence rarely found in someone so young.  A natural innovator and leader\, he runs two of his own bands: the Zen Zadravec Quartet and his fusion group Human Revolution. Zadravec has also performed or recorded with: Ron Carter\, Louis Hayes\, Karriem Riggins\, Ali Jackson\, Mike Pope\, Mark Whitfield Jr.\, Bijon Watson\, Mark Gross\, Derrick Gardner\, Vincent Gardner\, Todd Bashore\, Kenny Davis\, Steve Turre\, Ralph Bowen\, Sean Jones\, Conrad Herwig\, Freddie Hendrix\, Don Thompson\, Lorne Lofsky\, Charles Fambrough\, Valery Ponomarev\, Dave Watson\, Darryl Dixon\, Gloria Gaynor\, Joan Rivers\, Bob Newhart\, Sally Kellerman\, among others. \n

SUMMARY:LUNAR OCTET
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating their 40th anniversary of playing original Latin jazz\, Ann Arbor’s award-winning Lunar Octet will celebrate their homecoming to the Dirty Dog by playing music from their new CD on Summit Records called “Convergence”.    \nThe record was the #1 New Release in Latin Jazz on Amazon and was named among the best jazz CDs in the Annual Jazz Critics Poll.  Downbeat Magazine said\, “Convergence bursts with joy and authority.” \nFrom the first note of the record\, you know that the Lunar Octet plays creative and original Latin jazz.  The band performs original and eclectic music\, blending jazz with Cuban and Puerto Rican salsa\, rock\, African high-life music\, and Brazilian sambas to forge a new sound enriched by these traditions.   The band’s original compositions involve rich arrangements and what Jazz Life Magazine called “colorful and tight grooves\, gorgeous three-horn arrangements\, and strong solos”. The band’s music is exciting\, dynamic\, and powerful\, including fiery Latin grooves\, driving funk rhythms\, swinging bop tunes\, and romantic ballads.
